The clinical trial, sponsored by Janssen Research & Development, LLC, aimed to compare the effects of Canagliflozin against alternative antihyperglycemic treatments on the risk of heart failure hospitalization and lower extremity amputation in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), particularly those with established cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given the increasing prevalence of T2DM and associated cardiovascular complications, this study addresses a significant market need. Canagliflozin, as an SGLT2 inhibitor, is positioned in a competitive landscape alongside other SGLT2 inhibitors like Empagliflozin and Dapagliflozin, as well as DPP-4 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists.
